Planting a Summer Garden
It is almost that time again, time for the Spring Break! Do you ever struggle to come up with ideas to keep the kids entertained? Look no further, here are some fun tips and tricks to battle boredom and keep your family happy and busy.
- Put together an Activity Jar- Draw up a list with your children of the things they like or might want to do. Board games, a trip to the park, paint-by-numbers, an afternoon movie, etc. Then, have them draw one activity per day. It makes it fun to pick out of the jar and be surprised!
- Plan a Summer garden- whether you have a large plot for gardening space or a few planting pots on the deck, do some prep work during spring break to get your space ready for some fabulous food. You can give each child an area to be responsible for and let them plan what they will plant and grow. Once they’ve decided, take them out to buy the seeds and you’re all set!
- Pool your resources- get together with other parents and have each parent take the kids for a day. This alleviates some of the stress that can arise during this time and it is perfect for those parents who can’t take the whole week off.
- Plan break feasts- come up with some recipes that the kids can do (with adult supervision of course) and make break time feel like a special occassion. Fettuccine Alfredo and Caesar Salad are great examples. The kids can help plan, prepare and then share their delicious creations with their loved ones.
- How about a Spring scavenger hunt? Include hints about sounds of spring, plants, animals and more. Ask the kids to find a bud on a tree or bush, a blooming flower, a newborn animal of any species or a brightly colored bird. There are so many things that say Spring has arrived, just use your imagination!
- Play a game of Asteroid- get 4-6 kids from the neighborhood together with 1 foam ball (the asteroid) and 1 soccer ball. The object of the game is for Team Asteroid to throw their foam ball and hit Team Planet’s soccer ball. The catch is that Team Asteroid isn’t allowed to take any steps with their ball. Instead, they must pass it from team member to team member in order to get close enough to the planet for a shot. Once they make a direct hit, the teams can trade places.
- Take it outside- get a little fresh air into the mix by hiking some local trails. Be sure to pick a beginners trail so everyone in the family can embrace the great outdoors. This is a great way to spend quality time together and beats sitting in front of the TV!
